The Wroclaw Międzynarodowy Festiwal Festiwali Teatrów Studenckich / International Festival of Festivals of Student Theatre started in 1967 as a student theatre festival. At the 1969 festival, however, not only student actors appeared. This may have been the reason why, although it still retained ‘student’ in its name, it was increasingly transformed into an international festival of open theatre, and so its name was changed onto Międzynarodowy Studencki Festiwal Teatru Otwartego / International Student Festival of Open Theatre. All along, the festival featured the most radical and experimental performances and companies from the international theatre scene. In addition, the festival offered the opportunity to meet Jerzy Grotowski in person, to learn Grotowski’s method in workshops led by his actors, and to see Grotowski performances, although not as part of the official programme. All the organisation was carried out by Bogusław Litwiniec and his team. It was one of the most important international theatre events of the period. After 1975, the festival changed significantly, but it is still running today.
